#Inspired to have met with @mardiniysra at @worldeconomicforum . Heres Yusra's story: Growing up in #Damascus, Mardini trained in #swimming with the support of the Syrian Olympic Committee. In 2012, she represented Syria in the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships.

Yusra's house was destroyed in the Syrian Civil War. Yusra fled Syria in August 2015. They reached #Lebanon, and then #Turkey, where they arranged to be smuggled into #Greece by boat with 18 other migrants, though the boat was meant to be used by no more than six or seven people. After the motor stopped working and the dinghy began to take on water in the #Aegean Sea, Yusra, her sister, and two other people who were able to swim got into the water and pushed the boat for over 3 hours until it reached Lesbos. Yusra now lives in #Germany and represented #TeamRefugees at the #rioolympics.

Reach Sports

Inspired by the #RefugeeOlympicTeam in Rio last year, Wärtsilä and the Finnish peace broker organisation Crisis Management Initiative gave the annual ‘Philanthropy in Sports’ award to be used to promote sports opportunities for refugees. The award was accepted in the Finnish Sports Gala in Helsinki on 17 January 2017 by the team’s “Chef de Mission”, the 2016 UN Person of the year and our client, #TeglaLoroupe and one of the team’s athletes, Yiech Pur Biel from South Sudan. The award was handed over by Hussein al-Taee from CMI, and Atte Palomäki from Wärtsilä. We congratulate the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation for giving access to sport opportunities to refugees and #ReachSports will continue supporting #TeglaLoroupe in her efforts of promoting peace through sport. #powerofsport #sportforpeace #refugeees #teamrefugees #sport #peace #hope #accesstosports

Únete a mí. Apóyanos.

Voci Migranti

Eyasu [ITA, scroll for ENG] Sono africano.

Last month two Refugee Olympic Team members came together to meet children in Paris and receive gifts destined for South Sudanese refugee children.
Olympic runner Yiech Pur Biel and swimmer Rami Anis shared stories, craft and food from their cultures with children and their parents at pre-Christmas events. They moved the crowd and explained the importance of hope: “Most of the refugees in camps lose hope. They know where they came from, but they don’t know where they are going.” Yiech Pur Biel.

Sarah Mardini, 21, fled the war in Syria and crossed the Aegean Sea.

When the engine of their dinghy failed, elite Syrian swimmers Yusra and Sarah Mardini swam their boat with 18 survivors for 3 and a half hours to shore.
A year later Yusra made history at the 2016 Olympic Games in the first ever Refugee Olympic Team, and Sarah has returned to Lesvos as a volunteer lifeguard with Emergency Response Centre International (ERCI), continuing to save lives on the sea.

So 2016... Trump. It broke Europe apart with Brexit. It continued to terrorize the world in places like Germany, Brussels, and the Middle East. Aleppo. Dear God, Aleppo. My heart still breaks with news from that forgotten city. We lost legends of music like Prince and Bowie, whom whether you are a fan of or not, really did shape music at the end of the century. In movies Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder (which, ok, had all the years of the world), Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, making both nerds and gays mourn alike. Literature lost Umberto Ecco. I did not teach Santi how to water ski, but oh he tried. Friends moved away. 2016 seems like an awful year. Howver, it brought happy marriages, gave us beautiful new life, and brought new experiences. There was ice cream, concerts, incredible design, and more athletic achievements where conquered (whether it was me in the Chicago Marathon or with #TeamRefugees who stole our hearts in Rio). But, unfortunately the news didn't dominate our personal glorious moments of #happiness - heart breaking, anger inducing moments did. So I think it's okay that many of us are disillusioned with 2016. But let's hold on to the good, and give it our all to 2017! #2016 #2107 #reflection #bestofnine #bestof9 #fuck2016 #endofyear #onwardsandupwards
