Why I March - If you're reading this we are friends, acquaintances or colleagues. You know me and you know that if able, I'm willing to help. .
1 in 5 women will need to utilize Planned Parenthood for healthcare in their lifetime. I am the 1 in 5. .
At 22, fresh off the U-Haul from PA, before I landed a job with insurance benefits, there was a about a year where Cory and I lived in that, scrappy, exciting, scary time of just getting by - ramen noodles, how are we going to pay rent this month and please don't get pregnant stage of the relationship. .
But we weren't on our own, we had Planned Parenthood.
They took care of my woman's issues, you know, not wanting to get pregnant just yet. I was able to walk into a Planned Parenthood and get what most of us call our annual lady-doctor appointment. I received professional, comprehensive and dignified care from a doctor - Pap smear, breast exam, the whole kit and kaboodle. I also received a year's worth of contraceptives. .
All they asked from me was to donate what I could which wasn't much back then. But now, years later, I'm fortunate to have a career, one that offers many benefits, including healthcare. The moment I learned of the Pussyhat Project I knew I could help by putting my knitting skills to use. Uninterested in making money, I'm proud to donate all of the net proceeds from my #pussyhat sales to Planned Parenthood (over $1000 so far!).
I march for me, I march for you, your sisters, your daughters, your wives, your son's girlfriends. I march for us. .
This isn't extremist, progressive, conservative or liberal. This isn't politics. Women are normal. Sex is normal. Contraceptives are normal. Healthcare is normal. This is about women's rights, but really this is about human rights. We ALL have the right to be treated with dignity. We ALL have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
There has been a lot said lately about normalizing behavior so I'm marching to show the need for PP is normal. .
