"We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage. That's why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution. So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists. Because we're going to need them going forward. And they'll need us to safeguard the truth."

"We are glad that Okke Ornstein will be set free, but he should never have been arrested in the first place," said Carlos Lauría, senior program coordinator for the Americas at CPJ.

During a prison visit last Wednesday, Shawkan's family discovered that he had been moved from Tora Istiqbal prison along with the other defendants in his case. Hundreds of relatives of other prisoners, many of whom had made long journeys to visit their loved ones, shared their anger and confusion. The family was told, unofficially, that Shawkan and the others had been moved to Tora Tahqiq. The two prisons are in the same complex, but are run by different units of the prison authority.
Yesterday, Shawkan's mom and dad went to Tora Tahqiq. It took 12 hours, but they were able to see him. They say that he is well, although his cell is now more crowded: there are 18 prisoners in one cell, whereas before they were 12.

Shawkan, a young freelance #photojournalist, is in his fourth year of imprisonment although he has committed no crime, and prosecutors have presented no evidence against him.

A coalition of 26 international media freedom and human rights advocacy groups, including CPJ, called on Turkey to lift emergency measures that have resulted in the stifling of criticism and dissent; the detention of large numbers of individuals, including more than 100 journalists; and the removal of fair trial protections and safeguards against torture. The statement came in response to Turkey's extension of state of emergency provisions for another 90 days. 📷Reuters/Umit Bektas

" 'Get out of the way! Move! Move!' at least four officers said before hitting me with their batons on my right forearm, my left hand, my right shoulder, my chest, and my right leg." This is what it's like reporting on some protests in Brazil.
Since those first demonstrations in May 2013, at least 293 journalists, bloggers, and photographers have been victims of aggression while covering street protests, according to the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (ABRAJI). The attacks documented by the association include cases of reporters being on the receiving end of tear gas and rubber bullets, being beaten in truncheon attacks, and harassed by protesters. In some cases, the police seized equipment and erased information on cell phones or cameras.

Almost half of the incidents took place in Brazil's biggest city São Paulo and "more than half of those (62%) were deliberate." 📷 @ap.images / Andre Penner

Amy Goodman, who hosts the global news program Democracy Now!, faces criminal trespass charges in connection with her reporting on protests against the construction of an oil pipeline opposed by Native American tribes in the region.
The warrant, issued September 8, followed Goodman's filming of security guards using dogs and pepper spray to disperse protesters seeking to stop the construction of the pipeline. Both protesters and security guards were injured in the September 3 clash, according to the reports.

The Morton County's Sherriff's Department issued a statement saying that protesters entered private land after breaking down a fence, according to the NPR report. Democracy Now! reported on its website that an officer from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation acknowledged in an affidavit that Goodman is seen in the video identifying herself as a journalist and interviewing protesters. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, Goodman could face a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail.

“Photography is not a hobby for me. It’s a way of life.” Mahmoud Abou Zeid, better known as "Shawkan", an Egyptian photojournalist wrote from the infamous Tora prison. Shawkan has been imprisoned since August 14, 2013, when he was arrested while covering the dispersal of a protest of supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, one of the most violent events in the country’s modern history. Shawkan, who was 25 at the time of his arrest, has now spent more than 1000 days behind bars.
