17 JAN: Venezuela has issued new bigger denomination banknotes because of the country's soaring inflation rate. The notes were meant to be released in December, but their distribution was delayed, causing chaos as Venezuelans queued for days to exchange their old bills. Venezuela has the highest rate of inflation in the world, making its smaller banknotes virtually worthless. President Nicolas Maduro says the withdrawal of the 100-bolivar bill was vital to tackle "smuggling mafias", whom he accuses of hoarding vast amounts of cash. They sell products subsidised by Venezuela's socialist government, including petrol and medicines, at high profit margins. The billboard, which has displayed electrical advertisements for more than a century, went dark for the first time since World War Two, except for power cuts and special events. A temporary advertising banner will replace the lights until a permanent single screen is unveiled in autumn to replace the current six screens. About 100 million people are estimated to pass through Piccadilly Circus each year.
